Description

This month’s pub is the Rusty Mackerel, established in 1892 in County Donegal. The Rusty Mackerel is a renowned traditional Irish Bar & Restaurant made famous for its music, food, and warm & friendly atmosphere at the foot of the Sliabh Liag Mountains. The pub proudly pours local craft beers along with the legendary “Silkie” Irish Whiskey which is distilled less than a mile away. Their food menu reflects the best seasonal local produce Donegal has on offer served in the flag-stoned bar with fish caught at night and delivered fresh to the door every morning.

In 2018 Robert Lynch, a Meath man, saw potential in the run down old pub and set out to create a special place for patrons to come from near and far to make new friends and promise to return. After months of restoration the pub opened with the addition of the beer garden, a new kitchen, and 13 new bedrooms for overnight guests. Robert turned a pub on the brink of closure into a thriving destination that now employs over 30 people! Today, after sensitive restoration, it has retained some of the best characteristics of the past and makes a perfect stopping place. It is enriched by the varied characters who have been frequenting this establishment for decades, with many now portrayed on the exterior walls, making it an iconic backdrop for photographs.

The Rusty Mackerel hosts live music 7 nights a week in the summer, and invites visitors to join in, or sit back and enjoy a “Silkie” with the local characters. Cozy up to the open turf fire on a rainy day, or sit outside and enjoy the sun in their beautiful beer garden overlooking Sliabh Liag.
